Solar Powered Lights Help Poor Communities
Jan/100
The most obvious selling point of Solar Powered Lights is for the preservation of the environment and the solution for the depletion of our natural resources. This is the reason why the use of renewable energies are widely accepted and even promoted by many environmetal groups and individuals. But the use of such technology has other benefits that most people, who enjoy and take for granted the most common source of energy called of, don’t realize.
Electricity is one of the most basic utilities that modern people enjoy. It is too basic that most people who were born in technologically advanced places take it for granted. However, there are places in this planet where the term electricity does not even exist.
Poverty stricken communities, especially those found in the poorest corners of third world countries have never experienced electricity. To many of these people, they do not see this as a dilemma since they have been used to their lifestyle without electricity or light. But to people educated people like many of us, we know that such conditions can’t be that good for any community.
First of all, a community or town without electricity or light could never have a profitable industry. This means that this poor community will remain poor because there are not many good job opportunities available to them. Second, without sufficient artificial light, the students from these poor communities will not be lifted from their state of ignorace. How can one learn to read, write or understand the basic principles of arithmetic if they can’t read their books at night?
This is where i see the use of Solar Energy very helpful and beneficial. Since solar powered lights are practically cheaper, providing such technology to these areas will help improve their standard of living.
In the Philippines, since it is made up of more than seven thousand islands, there are islands where electricity is not available. People live and survive only by fishing and farming, livelihoods that can’t really provide sufficient income for a decent kind of lifestyle. Even government officials are concerned with this because they are having problems supplying electricity to these areas. It isn’t exactly practical to have powerplants in every island and it’s not that easy to distribute electricity from one power plant to various islands.
This is where I think Solar Powered lights are very useful. If these communities are provided with solar panels, they could actually harness the power of the sun and utilize them as a source of energy which they can use. True, it may not be enough for them to actually have a profitable industry, but it would definitely help to educate the students from these poor islands.
With artificial light at night, it would be easier for these people to learn how to read and write. And by doing so, these people will be lifted from their state of illiteracy.
Other than saving the planet and preserving our natural resources. I think that solar powered lights have an even more noble purpose and that is to help in the education and enlightenment of poor communities in the most poverty stricken corners of the world.
